Donald Gene, son of Hugo and Florence (Georgius) Ewoldt, was born on December 11, 1935, at Manning, Iowa. He attended country school near Manilla and graduated from Manilla High School in 1954. Don enlisted in the Army following high school. He served for three years in Baumholder, Germany, operating road equipment on construction projects. After his honorable discharge in 1958, Don worked as a truck driver for Milton Sinow in Aspinwall, then for Floyd Grage in Manilla. On August 23, 1960, Don was united in marriage with Verna Bachman at St. Marys Church in Auburn, celebrating 45 wonderful years of marriage. Five children were born to this union. Don operated Donald Ewoldt Trucking since 1966, and he was well known for hauling livestock and grain. Don was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manilla and was active in the Holy Name Society. He was involved in the Manilla Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Don loved to watch NASCAR racing and football on TV. He truly thought the world of his grandchildren. Following a sudden stroke, Don was transferred from Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison to Bergen Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. He died there early on Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 23 days. Preceding Don in death are his parents. Don is survived by his wife Verna Ewoldt of Manilla; children: Kathleen and husband Bruce Carl of Harlan; Thomas Ewoldt and wife Traci of Harlan; Annette and husband Robert Wells of Lake View; LuAnn and husband Tim Vollstedt of Arcadia; and Lynn Ewoldt and wife Kris of Elk Horn, NE; eight grandchildren: Keith Carl; Taylor, Blake and McKenna Ewoldt; Abbie and Colton Wells; and Lauren and Morgan Anderson; brother Stanley Ewoldt of Manning; other relatives and many friends.
