Donald Joseph, son of John Curly? and Bertha (Hulsing) Bauer was born October 7, 1931 at Carroll, Iowa. He attended Sts. Peter and Pauls School and later began working for Heider Manufacturing. In January 1953, Don was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served in the Korean War as Sgt. of the 1st Battery of the 10th Field Artillery, Company A. Upon his discharge he returned to Carroll.
On November 20, 1954 Don was united in marriage with Joan Drees at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton. The couple made their home in Carroll and in 1960 Don began working for Farmland Foods in Denison. In 1964 the family moved to Manilla. Don continued working for Farmland Foods until his retirement in 1993.
Don was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manilla, the Holy Name Society, and the Manning VFW Post. He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to hunt and fish, grow flowers, garden, and a Chicago Cubs fan. Don also actively served his community, working as a volunteer.
Don passed away at his home in the early morning on April 1, 2009. He was 77 years, 5 months, and 22 days of age.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Bauer of Manilla, children Mary (Rick) Underwood of Denison, Sheila (Jim) Sleister of West Burlington, Cathy (Steve) Pfannkuch of Manning, Mike (Billie) of Portland, OR, Mark (Rita) of Seattle, WA, Barb (Pete) Rasmussen of Irwin, Pat (Gary) Palmer of Manilla, Ann (Bill) Lockwood of Maryville, MO; sister, Betty (Robert) Poen of Lake City; brothers-in-law Herb (Carol) Drees of State Center; Jim (Pat) Drees of Manning; and Dean (Ruth) Drees of Manning; 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, grandchildren Billie Underwood Brink and Josh Underwood; sister Darlene and husband Clete Geotzinger; brother LaVerne Bauer and wife Mable and in"laws Henry and Marie Drees.
