Daryl Don, son of William Tracy and Wilda Oletha (Davis) Chapman, was born May 9, 1937, at rural Vail, Iowa.  He attended rural schools in Milford and Paradise Townships in Crawford County, and graduated from Denison High School in 1956.  After graduation Daryl served in the United States Army for two years, serving with the combat engineers and as a helicopter mechanic.  He was located at Ft. Rooker, Alabama; Ft. Chafee, Arkansas; and Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri.  Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the Denison area where he was employed with the State Highway Commission as a rodman on a surveyor crew.

On February 13, 1960, Daryl was united in marriage with Carole Ann Rostermundt at Moville, Iowa.  Nine children were born to this union.  The couple made their home in the Schleswig area where Daryl was employed with the Braase Service Station and later, driving truck for the Schleswig Transfer and Tuet Brothers companies, owning his own semi-tractor part of this time.

In 1966, the family moved to the Manilla area.  He worked as a technician for Bauer Lindsey Soft Water, Denison.  In 1967 he began employment as a laborer with World Wide Meats, Denison; then spent 20 years at Farmland Foods.   Daryl worked as a welder at Petersen Manufacturing, Denison, for nine years.   He became semi-retired in 2005, and until recently worked at Volkert Camper Sales in Denison.  Daryl had very strong work ethics and made many friends during his years of employment.

Daryl especially loved being with his family and taking road trips and vacations with his wife.  His passion was deer hunting which he had enjoyed since his youth in the timbers near the Chapman family farm.  Hunting became a family tradition with his sons, grandsons, and brothers.  Daryl enjoyed nature and was an outdoorsman.  His hobbies were creative welding and collecting deer, wildlife and American Indian figurines and wall decorations. He enjoyed spending time with his relatives and friends, playing cards, telling stories and jokes.  Daryl will be remembered for his warm heart, generosity, and acceptance of others.

Daryl had been diagnosed with cancer at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.  He returned home to Manilla and was under hospice care for a few weeks before his death on Wednesday night, May 2, 2007, at the age of 69 years, 11 months, and 23 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Gavin Stone; father-in-law Carl Rostermundt; and brother-in-law Charles Rostermundt.

Daryl is survived by wife, Carole Chapman of Manilla; children: Jane Bandow (Dale) of Manilla; Robert Chapman (Debra) of Manilla; Theresa  Stone (Scott) of Kasson, MN; Marilynn Coleman (John) of Omaha, NE; Kurt Chapman (Jennifer) of Manilla; Regina Ransom (Rudy) of Ozark, MO; Lynda Benson (Lynn) of Grimes; Kent Chapman (Theresa) of Indianola; Sara Wells (Jackie Jr.) of Altoona; grandchildren: April Brotherson; Joe Bandow; Dennis (Kayla); Sean (Autumn); Tami, Chris and Erik Chapman; Justine Stone; Josh, Kyle and Emily Coleman; Alyssa, Allison and Cody Chapman; Kinzlee and Kassidy Ransom; Cole, Paige and Luke Benson; Sage and Sawyer Chapman; Sierra and Jackie Wells III; great-grandchildren: Shelbie and Ragen Brotherson; and Brody Chapman; mother-in-law Inez Rostermundt;  sisters: Marilyn Woebke of Manilla and Norma Jean?
