Daryl Baker

August 9, 1914 — April 14, 2006

Graveside Funeral Service with military honors will be held Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at 2:00 pm Coon Rapids Cemetery.

Daryl Edward, son of Edward and Hazel (Yager) Baker, was born August 9, 1914, on a farm southwest of Coon Rapids, in Audubon County, Iowa. He moved with his parents to Spirit Lake where he attended North Superior Schools. In 1940 the family moved to Coon Rapids and Daryl began working for Les Miner on his farm. In 1941 Daryl was drafted into the United States Army. He served four and one half years mostly in the islands in the Pacific around Japan. Upon his honorable discharge, Daryl returned to Coon Rapids and went back to work again for Les Miner. On July 2, 1949, Daryl was united in marriage with Mae Jean Sigler at Greenbriar Church in Greene County, as there was no minister available in Coon Rapids or Bayard. They lived on a farm near Anita for several years before settling on an acreage east of Coon Rapids. They made their home there for 50 years before moving into town. Many people remember Daryl and Mae Jean for the fruits and vegetables they grew and sold locally. Daryls hobby was working in the garden. However, he did enjoy playing cards, checkers and marbles. As his health began to fail, Daryl was able to remain at home where he died on Friday, April 14, 2006, at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 5 days. Preceding him in death are his parents, infant son John Edward Baker and three sisters Geneva Miner, Maxine Larkins and Darlene Beckman. Daryl is survived by his wife Mae Jean Baker of Coon Rapids; brother Duane Baker and wife Beverly of Coon Rapids; nieces and nephews including Richard Baker, Cindy Heydon, Tom Miner, Judy Pugh, Mickey Starr and Donna Sanders; other relatives and friends.
