Charles Evans, son of Fred and Maude (Garner) Hughes was born November 19, 1931, in Sewanee, Tennessee, where he attended school. In 1950 he entered the United States Navy and served in San Diego, California. On December 1, 1953, Chuck was united in marriage with Marloene Thompson at San Diego. Upon receiving his honorable discharge in 1954, Chuck and Marloene returned to Iowa and he attended Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls. In 1955, he transferred to Middle Tennessee State where he graduated in May of 1959. Chuck once again returned to Iowa and worked at Latimer State Bank from 1959 to 1961. It was at this time in 1961 that Marloene died of cancer. On September 2, 1963, Chuck was blessed with a second marriage, this time to Ramona Long at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. Chuck and Ramona made their home in Manning where he worked as a loan officer for First National Bank until his retirement in 1993. Chuck was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Manning, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid golfer and card player and enjoyed having his children and grandchildren around him. In April of 2005, Chuck was diagnosed with cancer and received loving care in his home from his family and Crawford County Hospice. On Friday, December 9, 2005, he died at Manning Regional Healthcare in Manning, Iowa, at the age of 74 years and 20 days. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Kenneth and Roy Hughes and a sister Evelyn King.
