Chester 'Pete' Milo Krogstad, son of Edwin and Lenora (Petersen) Krogstad, was born February 11, 1919 in the family home which was two miles south of Elk Horn, Iowa. He graduated from Elk Horn High School in May of 1936. On February 28, 1941, Pete was united in marriage with Geraldine 'Gere' Archibald in Nevada, Iowa. The family made their home in Elk Horn and three children were born to this union. Pete was very entrepreneurial, finding employment where there were available opportunities. Upon graduation from high school, at age 17, he owned the first school bus and operated the first school bus route in Elk Horn. Soon he owned his own livestock trucking business which he operated until drafted into the United States Army in July of 1944. He proudly served his Country in India during World War II where he was in charge of the Motor Pool which supported a critical military supply line commonly referred to as the "Burma Road." Upon his honorable military discharge in July of 1946, he resumed the operation of his trucking business. Pete operated the trucking business until 1955 when he decided his family took precedence over the many nights away from home in route to and from the Omaha Stockyards. Pete then worked for the city of Elk Horn for a number of years before he started working at Hoegh Oil Company in Atlantic where he remained for 24 years. Pete retired at the age of 62 and again drove school bus for Elk Horn Schools. He was a member and former treasurer for the Exira Seventh-day Adventist Church. Pete was a baseball fan for most of his life. He visited many different Big League parks with various family members. He often participated in many activities that his children and grandchildren were passionate about, whether it was hunting and fishing or riding horses in parades. He was a very supportive father and grandfather. Pete especially enjoyed spending time with his family. After the death of Gere in 1999, Pete continued to live in Elk Horn until 2010 when he moved to Primrose Assisted Living in Council Bluffs. He maintained his home in Elk Horn never giving up hope that he could one day return there. Pete went to Hillcrest Health and Rehab in Bellevue, NE, shortly before his death on January 5, 2014 at the age of 94 years, 10 months and 25 days. Besides Gere, he is preceded in death by his parents; grandson Timothy Christensen; granddaughter Kristy (Krogstad) Sigvartsen; brothers Stanley, Alvin, and Norman; sister Goldie Calkins. Pete is survived by his three children: Jack Krogstad (Nancy) of Glenwood; Eileen Ryun (Wesley) of Council Bluffs and Patti Edwards (Patrick) of North Liberty; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law Arlene Krogstad of Sun Lake, AZ, and Mary Krogstad of Manitowoc, WI; nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends.
