Charles Gene, son of Gifford and Helen (Stone) Yager, was born April 8, 1940 in Viola Township, Audubon County, Iowa. He grew up on the farm and started school in Viola and then graduated from Audubon High School, Audubon in 1958. Chuck moved to California where he attended Whittier College. He enlisted in the United States Army on May 3, 1963 where he was in the Military Police while stationed in Germany. After his honorable discharge on April 19, 1965 Chuck returned to Coon Rapids, Iowa where he worked for Garst and Thomas Seed Corn Company holding many positions during his over 40 years with the company. Chuck was in the Army Reserve until 1968.
On September 19, 1970 Chuck was united in marriage with Helen Hartl at St. Joseph Church in Dedham. They made their home in Coon Rapids and were the parents of two children. Chuck enjoyed his home and planted a big garden. He could be found tinkering in his shed, refinishing furniture or working on his coin collection. Chuck also enjoyed ‘antiquing’ around the area as well as driving his golf cart around town and having coffee at the Legion Hall. In later years, he took great joy in being with his grandchildren whenever possible. He was very interested in following politics. He was a member of Annunciation Parish in Coon Rapids and American Legion Gurney Parker Post 357.
Chuck started having health problems due to a kidney stone in 2016 at which time they discovered a tumor on his kidney. As the problems escalated he died rather unexpectedly at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa on Monday, June 19, 2017 at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 11 days.
Preceding him in death are his parents, brother Virlyn Yager and sister Marilyn Benna.
Chuck is survived by his wife Helen Yager of Coon Rapids; daughter Keri Lindaman (Mark) of Colorado Springs, CO; son Ryan Yager, Coon Rapids; four grandchildren Grant and Callie Lindaman and Clay and Aubree Yager; sister Evonne Schaaf of Des Moines; brothers Jerry Yager (Kay) of Coon Rapids and Delmar Yager of Coon Rapids; other relatives and friends.
