Bethel Elizabeth, daughter of George Henry and Mary Etta (Raygor) Johnston, was born July 1, 1916, at Coon Rapids, Iowa. She attended country school and then Coon Rapids High School.
On August 28, 1935, Bethel was united in marriage with Gerald John Goodwin at Glidden. They were the parents of three daughters. Bethel and Gerald farmed and made their home around Coon Rapids. Bethel was a devoted mother and homemaker. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, canning and crocheting doilies. Bethel was always willing to baby-sit for family and neighbors however her greatest joy was doing things for her family. Bethel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids.
Bethel and Gerald became residents of the Thomas Rest Haven in March 2001 when they could no longer live at home. Gerald died in April of 2007. Bethels health gradually declined and she died at Thomas Rest Haven on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, at the age of 91 years,
Preceding Bethel in death are her parents; husband Gerald; infant daughter Janice June Goodwin; siblings: Joe Johnston, June Goodwin, Ernest Johnston, Lorene Betts, and son-in-law William Andersen.
Bethel is survived by daughters Audrey (Gary) Troutman and Rita (Allan) Malcom, all of Coon Rapids; four grandchildren: Karla (Chris) Naylor of Scranton; Kevin Andersen (Mary) of Fairfield; Allison (Dave) Langel of Coon Rapids; Nathan Malcom (Anna) of Maple River; eleven great grandchildren: Alisha (Courtney) Lauffer; Jenny (Tyler) Rohrbeck; Nicole (Bob) Bills; Wyatt and Dakota Andersen; Michael, Megan and Matthew Langel; and Justin, Eric and Kaitlyn Malcom; great-great-grandson Adam Bills; three step-grandchildren: Deb (Pug) Starcevich of Altoona; Denise (Marty) Simpson of Des Moines; and Dawn Buhr of Des Moines; five step-great grandchildren; sister LaVon Smouse; sisters-in-law Ruby Goodwin and Irene Johnston; brother-in-law Glenn Betts; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
