Bertha Johnson

Bertha Elizabeth, daughter of Joseph and Cecelia (Herbers) Halbur, was born May 6, 1914 at home near Halbur, Iowa. She attended school at St. Augustine's in Halbur. On January 3, 1953 Bertha was united in marriage with Lawrence E. Johnson at St. Augustine Church in Halbur. She was a life time member of St. Augustine Parish and worked at the church for Rev. H. B. Kramer. Throughout her life, Bertha considered her eight nieces and nephews and their families as her own. She particularly loved her gardening and always had lovely flowers. She enjoyed baking, quilting, sewing for others and babysitting. After the death of her husband in 1995 Bertha lived in their home in Halbur until 2012, when she moved to St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Bertha remained mentally alert right up until her death on Friday, October 24, 2014 at St. Anthony Hospital. She was 100 years, 5 months, and 18 days. Preceding her in death are her husband; parents; two brothers Albert (Agnes) Halbur and Lawrence Halbur; sister Sister Iva Halbur; nephew Jerome Halbur; nephew-in-law Bob Hulsing; and in-laws Gerald (Rita Johnson, Robert (Rose) Johnson, Leo Johnson, Robert Johnson, Walter Johnson and Trudy Kirchner. She is survived by her nieces and nephews: Alvina (Vincent) Leiting of Westside; Janice Hulsing and special friend Val Buchanan of Roselle; Jim (Betty) Halbur of Halbur; Gary (Jolene) Halbur of Roselle; Leroy (Donna) Halbur of Manning; Marvin (Pat) Halbur of Mannin; Ivan (Linda) Halbur of Halbur; niece in law Virginia Halbur (Leroy) Schultes of Templeton; 31 great nieces and nephews; 63 great great nieces and nephews; 7 great great great nieces and nephews; sister in law Helen Halbur of Carroll; and Lawrence's family Anita Johnson, Leonard (Martina) Johnson and Mary Etta Johnson; other relatives and friends. Memorial contributions/masses may be made to St. Augustine Parish The family wishes to express their gratitude for your kindness evidenced in thought, word and deed, and invites you to join them for lunch and fellowship at the Parish Center following the committal service.
