Bernice Evelyn, daughter of Harry Sr. and Sophia (Koepke) Martens, was born on October 26, 1916, near Arcadia, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia. Bernice grew up north of Manning on a farm and attended rural schools. She worked at home on the farm until her marriage.
On February 20, 1935, Bernice was united in marriage with Herman Mohns in Manning. The couple farmed northwest of Manning until retiring and moving in to Manning in 1966. After their move, Bernice worked as a nurses aide at the Manning Plaza for 12 years until her health caused her to retire. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning and active in the Ladies Guild. In her spare time Bernice enjoyed playing cards, gardening, cooking, baking and spending time with family.
After a long illness Bernice died early on Saturday morning, August 4, 2007, at the Manning Plaza in Manning, Iowa. She was 90 years, 9 months and 9 days of age.
Preceding Bernice in death are her parents; husband Herman Mohns in 1982; grandson Michael Mohr; brothers Frank Martens and wife Elizabeth; Harry Martens and wife Ethel; and Leonard Martens; sisters Lorraine and husband Herbert Ewoldt; Milda and husband Louis Hansen and Luella and husband Harry Karstens; parents-in-law Carl Mohns and wife Wilhelmina; and brother-in-law William Mohns.
Bernice is survived by children Arlene and husband Franklin Mohr of Manning and Charles Mohns and wife Tracey of West Des Moines; 10 grandchildren: Steven Mohr and wife Kathy; Deborah and husband William Ranniger; Daniel Mohr and wife Sharon; Rebecca and husband Kenneth Eischeid; Jonathan Mohr and wife Lisa; Elizabeth and husband Ben Booth; Mary Ann and husband Chris Greving; Michelle and husband Brent Prichard and Ethan and Emily Mohns; 28 great-grandchildren; 4 step great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Marrola Martens of Carroll; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
