Arthur "Art" E. Joens, son of John H. and Adelia M. (Nehls) Joens, was born May 11,1925 in Manilla, Iowa and graduated from Manilla High School in 1943. Art missed his high school graduation ceremony to enlist in the U.S. Navy and proudly served during World War II earning an honorable discharge in 1946. He then pursued further education at Georgia Tech, where he graduated in 1948 with a Master of Science Degree.
Art embarked on a distinguished career in the field of petroleum exploration and production, during which he undertook various engineering and management assignments across Texas, California, Alaska, and Louisiana. He was heavily involved in development and construction of the Alaska Pipeline. His professional life was marked by a pursuit of excellence, culminating in his retirement from Exxon Oil Company in 1975. Following his retirement, Art returned to the family farm near Manilla, where he continued to make meaningful contributions to the land he cherished.
Art was blessed with three marriages. In 1951, he was united in marriage with Eugenia "Jenkie" Smith in Baytown, Texas. She passed away in 1978. In 1981, Art married Marian Sattles Bergstadt, in Georgetown, Indiana. Marian passed away in 2004. On July 31, 2004, Art married Peggy Calvin in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Throughout his life, Art was deeply committed to his faith and community. He was a dedicated member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, where he served in several offices. He also served in Iowa District West of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod for many years.
In addition to his commitment to his church, he served on the Crawford County Soil Commission, where he worked tirelessly to improve soil conservation practices. His efforts in this capacity reflected not only his professional background but also his deep-rooted respect for the environment and sustainable farming practices.
Art passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 having attained the age of 99 years, three months, and 23 days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives: Jenkie and Marian; son, Glen Joens; two sisters: Loretta Peterson and Verdella Koester; and brother, Harold Joens, who died in WWII.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Joens of Sioux City; daughter, Kathryn Joens of Kingsley, IA, and son, Alan Joens (Melissa Lanzourakis) of Sioux City; Peggy's children: Cynthia, Paul, John, and Flint; grandchildren: Philip, Kevin, and Rachel Joens, Michelle, Sheila, Amber (Jake); great-grandchildren: Nicole, Christopher, Liliana, Jaxson, and John; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, IA. Burial will be in the Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland and Midwest Honor Flight.
