Amanda Wilhelmina, daughter of John and Ida (Fischer) Dammann, was born February 17, 1907 on a farm four miles south of Manning, Iowa. She attended country school near her home. Amanda helped out on the farm and helped with household chores as she was growing up. Amanda was baptized in 1907 at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning and confirmed in 1927 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, south of Manning.
On October 14, 1925, Amanda was united in marriage with Karl Bogatzke. He had come to the area from Minnesota to work on her uncles farm. Amanda and Karl started farming on their own five years after they were married. Seven children were born to this union. Amanda was a homemaker, raising their children, tending the garden, canning meat and vegetables, milking cows and raising ducks and geese. She was an avid seamstress, making many quilts. When she had time, she loved going to dances and playing cards. In 1966, two years after they retired from farming, they moved into Manning. Amanda was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the VFW Auxiliary.
After the death of her husband on February 6, 1989, she continued to live in their home until April of 2006 when she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. She died there on Friday, March 6, 2009 at the age of 102 years and 17 days.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; four children: infant son, infant daughter, and two other daughters Mae Fogelman and Marilyn Holmes; and four siblings: Louie Dammann, Elsie Farrell, Alfred Dammann and Luella Hammann.
Amanda is survived by her children; Marvin Bogatzke of Audubon; Myron Bogatzke and wife Wilma of Manning; and Marlene Radtke of Oregon, WI; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
