Al Rix

September 19, 1935 — February 1, 2014

Allen Alfred, son of Alfred John and Elsie D. (Schroeder) Rix, was born on September 19, 1935 on the farm in Washington Township, Carroll County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Al attended rural school in Audubon County and then moved to Manning with his family in 1947. He graduated from Manning High School in 1954. Al enlisted and served in the United States Air Force from 1955-1959. On August 23, 1960 in South Dakota, Al was united in marriage with Beverly Pickel of Schleswig. The couple resided in Manning and three children were born to this union. Al owned and operated a Standard Oil station (A&L Standard and later Rix Brothers) with his brother Larry. The station was located at the corner of Main Street and Hwy 141 in Manning. In 1998 Al realized his dream of building a new station with a convenience store further east on Hwy 141. Al absolutely loved the station and visiting with all of the customers over the years. He also enjoyed flying his plane and ran a crop-dusting business during 1980. Al enjoyed singing and playing the banjo and accordion. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Al was recognized for 40 years of service on the Manning Municipal Gas Board. Following a short illness, Al died early Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He was 78 years, 4 months and 13 days of age. He is preceded in death by his parents; grandson Shane Johnson; brother Don Rix and his wife Donna Rix; and brother-in-law Art Kuhn. Al is survived by his wife Beverly Rix of Manning; children: Terri (Scott) Rosener of Manning; Tammi (Mike) Powers of Manning; Traci (Tom) Ewoldt of Harlan; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 2 step-great grandchildren; sister Delores Kuhn of Manning; brother Larry (Dorothy) Rix of Des Moines; other relatives and many friends and customers.
